Off-Duty Rathdrum Police Officer Killed in Saturday Morning Wreck

(Updated 9:28 p.m.) - An off-duty Rathdrum police officer was killed Saturday morning when his motorcycle was involved with a two vehicle accident four miles south of Cusick.

Jonathon Franco, 27, had been with Rathdrum police since 2006 working as a patrol officer.

Coeur d'Alene Press reported that Franco's motorcycle hit a Plymouth whose driver slowed for an injured deer in the road. Motorcycle debris from wreck struck a third vehicle.

Family and friends have been remembering him on his Facebook page since word got out.

Spokane Valley-based photographers, Shmily Face Photography, spent time with him in May. They photographed him after he won a free photo shoot. The photographs taken during sunset and its golden hour depict Franco and his love for his motorcycle.

On a blog, a childhood friend wrote: "I met this kid on the playground once. Some other little boy was being mean to me and Jonathon came to my rescue."

Memorial plans have not been finalized and are currently being made by the family.
